Colored Bulb Anemone

The Colored Bulb Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant coloration, bulb-tipped tentacles, and ability to host clownfish. Males typically do not differ visually from females, while juveniles often display longer, thinner tentacles that may develop the characteristic bulb tips as they mature. They reach about 12–18 inches across when fully expanded and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30–40 gallons (larger is strongly recommended).

Provide ample live rock for attachment, moderate water flow, and open space for tentacle expansion, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). Unlike fish, they do not jump, but a secure, stable aquascape is essential to prevent them from wandering into pumps or corals.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with strong lighting for photosynthetic zooxanthellae symbiosis. With proper care, this anemone makes a standout centerpiece in a reef aquarium, often serving as a natural host for various species of clownfish.
