The Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking coloration, bold black-and-white patterning, bright yellow spots on the lower body, and its large, unique shape.
Males typically display more vibrant colors and develop a slightly larger, more pronounced body, while females and juveniles are smaller with less intense patterning. They reach about 20 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide a sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since these fish are prone to jumping.
Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and occasional meaty foods. With proper care, the Clown Triggerfish makes a striking and dynamic centerpiece for a large marine aquarium.
