The Chocolate-Dip Chromis (Chromis dimidiata) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking two-tone coloration with a dark front half and bright white tail, as well as its active schooling behavior.
Males typically become slightly larger, more territorial during spawning, and display intensified coloration, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller, less territorial, and maintain a softer color contrast.
They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger if kept in groups). Provide ample live rock for hiding spots along with open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since they are known jumpers.
Diet should consist of a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and visually striking addition to both reef and community aquariums.
