Chiseltooth Wrasse

Chiseltooth Wrasse (Pseudodax moluccanus) is a striking, semi-aggressive wrasse that demands a lot from its keeper but rewards with bold color, behavior, and personality. Juveniles resemble cleaner wrasses with dark bodies and blue longitudinal stripes; as they mature, adults shift into reddish-brown or greenish bodies with red-edged scales, a yellow upper lip, blue streaks, and a yellow base on the tail with a black tip. Full adult size reaches about 10-12 inches. Best housed in a tank of at least 100 gallons, with deep fine sand for burying at night or when spooked, abundant live rock for hiding and foraging, stable reef parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temp ~72-78°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), and a tight lid because this species will jump. Diet must be strongly carnivorous and varied—meaty frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, crustaceans), supplemented by vitamin-rich preparations. Be aware: it’s not reliably reef-safe — small invertebrates and very delicate corals may be at risk with adult specimens.
