Chinstrap Jawfish

The Chinstrap Jawfish (Opistognathus wassi) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinctive black "chinstrap" marking, expressive face, burrowing behavior, and rarity in the hobby. Males typically are slightly larger and may exhibit mouthbrooding behavior during reproduction, while females/juveniles are smaller and more secretive, often remaining close to their burrow. They reach about 4 to 5 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, preferably larger for stability and burrowing space.

Provide a deep sandbed (3–4 inches or more) for burrowing, live rock for structure, and plenty of hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure, tight-fitting lid since jawfish are notorious jumpers. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets, and with proper care, this fish makes a standout and fascinating addition to the aquarium due to its bold personality and unique behaviors.
