For size preference please add a note on your order and we will match your fish to your requested size. The Checkered Dottyback (Cypho zaps) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive black-and-white checkered body pattern, compact size, and bold, alert behavior. Its eye-catching appearance and confident nature make it a fascinating addition to nano and mid-sized reef aquariums.
Males typically grow slightly larger and may show more vibrant pattern definition and territorial behavior, particularly during breeding. Females and juveniles tend to be smaller and may display subtler checkered markings.
They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 to 30 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices to establish territories and reduce stress. While they enjoy patrolling their space, they also benefit from some open swimming areas.

A tight-fitting lid is essential, as dottybacks are prone to jumping when startled.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine meats, and high-quality pellets or flakes. A varied and nutrient-rich diet supports optimal coloration and health.
With proper care, the Checkered Dottyback can be a visually striking and active member of the saltwater aquarium community. However, care should be taken with peaceful or similarly shaped tankmates, as dottybacks can show territorial aggression in smaller tanks.

On request, we also send photos/videos after arrival at IA. Some species are import-to-order (3-10 business days). Many common species are already cleared or near the end of QT.
Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
