Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides phthirophagus) is a striking, reef-safe cleaner wrasse endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, and captive-bred specimens represent a huge leap forward in both sustainability and aquarium success. Peaceful in temperament, this fish establishes cleaning stations and forms symbiotic relationships with “client” fish, helping keep them healthy by removing parasites and dead tissue. It reaches about 5 inches in length. Best kept in tanks of at least 100 gallons, with very stable water (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temperature ~75-82°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), abundant live rock to mimic reef crevices, a fine sand substrate (for nightly resting and natural behaviors), and a tightly sealed lid since wrasses are notorious jumpers. Diet must be carefully managed—while cleaning behavior supplies some nutrition, captive-bred individuals also need regular feedings of quality frozen/fresh meaty foods (copepods, mysis, finely chopped seafood), and ideally supplemental feeding multiple times per day when young.
