Caribbean Sharpnose Pufferfish

The Caribbean Sharpnose Pufferfish (Canthigaster rostrata) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant blue lines across the face, golden-tan body coloration, compact size, and playful yet curious behavior.

Males typically display brighter, more defined blue facial markings and may be more territorial, while females and juveniles tend to have slightly muted patterns and a calmer demeanor. They reach about 3–4 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, sandy areas, and some open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since puffers can be prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, quality marine pellets, along with some algae or plant matter to help keep their beak-like teeth from overgrowing. With proper care, this hardy and entertaining fish makes a standout addition to a marine aquarium, offering both personality and beauty.
