Caribbean Clown Goby

The Caribbean Clown Goby (Microgobius gulosus) is a peaceful species that is generally considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, mottled coloration with clown-like facial markings, and interesting perching and darting behaviors. While attractive, this species may nip at small invertebrates, so careful observation in reef systems is recommended.

Males typically grow slightly larger, with more vibrant markings and occasionally display territorial behavior around chosen burrows or resting spots, while females and juveniles remain smaller, with more muted coloration and less assertive behavior.

They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, with larger setups preferred for multiple specimens. Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing and foraging, live rock with crevices and hiding spots, and open swimming areas, along with a secure lid since gobies are prone to jumping.

Stable water parameters are required, with salinity maintained at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality pellets. While they may graze on microfauna within the sandbed, supplemental feedings are important for long-term health.

With proper care, the Caribbean Clown Goby makes a standout addition to aquariums, offering unique appearance, active behavior, and an interesting presence in both fish-only and some reef setups.
