The Camel Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes uritai) is a semi-aggressive invertebrate species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking red and white banded coloration, unique hump-backed body, and quirky swimming style. Males typically display slightly larger claws and more elongated appendages, while females and juveniles tend to have smaller, less pronounced features. Reaching about 2 inches in adulthood, Camel Shrimp should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots to help them feel secure. They thrive in stable water conditions with salinity between 1.020–1.025, temperatures around 72–79°F, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as these shrimp are active and capable of climbing. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, though they may also scavenge pellets and algae. With proper care and attention, the Camel Shrimp makes a fascinating and eye-catching addition to a marine aquarium.
