Burgundy Sea Star (Linckia / Echinaster sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking deep burgundy to magenta coloration, long cylindrical arms, and unique texture that adds visual interest to aquariums. Males typically cannot be visually distinguished from females, while females/juveniles display similar coloration and arm structure but are smaller in size. They reach about 6–8 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide a sandy substrate with live rock, hiding spots, and open areas for movement, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many sea stars are prone to crawling out of the tank. Diet should consist of detritus, microalgae, biofilm, and supplemental small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods. With proper care, this species makes a striking and low-maintenance addition to reef aquariums, adding both color and texture to the tank.
