Bullseye Pufferfish

The Bullseye Pufferfish (Sphoeroides annulatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking bullseye-like markings near the tail, smooth body patterning, curious personality, and impressive size compared to many other puffers.

Males typically display slightly bolder coloration and can be more territorial, while females and juveniles tend to have subtler markings and are generally less aggressive. They reach about 12–14 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 150 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with a fine sandbed. A secure lid is necessary, as puffers may jump when startled. Stable water parameters are key: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, krill, clams, squid, chopped shrimp, snails, and high-quality marine pellets—foods with hard shells are especially important to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. With proper care, this species makes a standout, personality-filled addition to large marine aquariums.
