The Bulb Anemone (Entacmaea sp.) is a fascinating invertebrate admired in marine aquariums for its striking appearance and symbiotic behavior. This species is generally semi-aggressive and reef-safe with caution, meaning it can peacefully coexist with many corals and fish, but its long stinging tentacles can harm nearby species if placed too close. It is especially cherished for its bright coloration, bulbous tentacle tips, dynamic movement, and unique relationship with clownfish, which often choose it as a host.

Males typically exhibit larger, thicker tentacles with more vibrant colors and may develop stronger bulbs at the tips. In contrast, females and juveniles are smaller, with softer tentacle colors and less pronounced bulb formation.

Adult Bulb Anemones reach about 12 inches in diameter and require a tank of at least 50 gallons to thrive. Their ideal habitat includes a sandbed and plenty of live rock for anchoring, along with moderate open swimming space for fish. They require stable water conditions: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is essential, as they have a tendency to “jump” or move unpredictably.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, chopped seafood, and marine pellets. Feeding 2–3 times weekly ensures strong growth and vivid coloration. With proper care, the Bulb Anemone becomes not only a captivating centerpiece but also a living, dynamic environment that adds both beauty and vitality to any reef aquarium.
