Brownbar Pistol Shrimp

The Brownbar Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus lobidens) is a semi-aggressive invertebrate species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its fascinating snapping claw, burrowing behavior, and subtle banded coloration. Males typically display slightly larger claws used for communication and defense, while females and juveniles are generally smaller and less robust in appearance. This species reaches about 2 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons, with plenty of live rock and a fine sandbed to allow for burrowing and shelter. A secure lid is strongly recommended, as pistol shrimp may attempt to escape. The ideal setup should provide hiding spots and, if desired, symbiotic partners such as watchman gobies to create natural pairings. They thrive in stable water parameters with a salinity of 1.020–1.025, temperature of 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4. Their diet should consist of a mix of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and sinking pellets. With proper care, the Brownbar Pistol Shrimp makes a unique and entertaining addition to a saltwater aquarium, bringing both function and personality to the reef.
