Brittle Sea Star

The Brittle Sea Star (Ophiocoma echinata) is a peaceful species that is generally reef-safe, admired for its distinctive long, spiny arms, intricate patterns, and ability to move quickly across the substrate.

Males typically are similar in appearance to females, though slightly smaller and slimmer, while females and juveniles often exhibit more vibrant arm coloration. They reach about 6–8 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a habitat with a deep sandbed, live rock for shelter, hiding spots, and open swimming space. Stable water parameters are essential, including salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, and pH ~8.1–8.4, and a secure lid is recommended since many brittle stars can climb or escape.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and prepared invertebrate pellets, while occasional algae supplements can be offered. With proper care, the Brittle Sea Star makes a fascinating and standout addition to the reef aquarium.
