Bridled Cardinalfish

The Bridled Cardinalfish (Apogon fraenatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking coloration featuring a pale body with distinctive dark “bridle” markings across the head and a subtle iridescence, moderate size, and calm temperament. Males typically engage in mouthbrooding, carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths to protect them until they hatch, while females/juveniles share similar coloration but are generally smaller and do not mouthbrood. They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with plenty of hiding spots and caves, as this species prefers shaded areas and low-light environments during the day. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and ensure a secure lid since cardinalfish are known to be jumpers. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods, with feeding ideally done in the evening when they are most active. With proper care, this fish makes a peaceful and attractive addition to reef and community aquariums.
