Brazilian Butterflyfish

Brazilian Butterflyfish (Prognathodes brasiliensis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold black-and-yellow coloration, vertical black bands, distinctive sloped forehead, and rarity in the aquarium trade, making it a prized species for experienced hobbyists. Males typically do not differ visually from females, while females/juveniles share the same striking coloration but may be slightly smaller and less vivid in color. They reach about 4.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, crevices and caves for retreat, and open swimming space, with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is recommended, as this species may jump when startled or stressed.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine-based pellets, and sponge-based or algae-rich frozen preparations. Over time, they may adapt to prepared foods, but initial feeding may require live or frozen fare. With proper care, this fish makes a rare and striking addition to a fish-only or carefully planned reef aquarium.
