Bluestripe Butterflyfish

Bluestripe Butterflyfish (Chaetodon fremblii) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant yellow body adorned with several striking horizontal blue stripes, compact size, and active, graceful swimming behavior. Males typically show no obvious external differences from females, while females/juveniles share the same coloration and pattern, though juveniles may appear slightly paler until fully mature. They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, open swimming space, and calm tankmates, with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is important, as butterflyfish can jump when startled.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, marine algae, sponge-based foods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Some individuals may nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef aquariums. With proper care, this fish makes a bright and charming addition to a peaceful marine aquarium setup.
