Bluehead Wrasse

Bluehead Wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum) is a lively, reef-associated wrasse that adds constant motion and color to any display. Males are unmistakable with their brilliant blue heads, green to turquoise bodies, and two vertical black bars just behind the head, while females and juveniles are yellow with subtle markings before transitioning in color as they mature. Growing to about 6 inches, this species thrives in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, with open swimming areas, rocky structures for cover, a sandy substrate, and a secure lid since wrasses are skilled jumpers. They are hardy and adapt well to community reef tanks, though they may show assertive behavior toward smaller, more timid fish. Their diet should be rich in meaty offerings such as mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or flakes, fed frequently to match their active lifestyle.
