Bluegill Longfin Grouper

Bluegill Longfin Grouper (Plesiops corallicola) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated fins, striking blue gill markings, cryptic body coloration, and secretive nature.

Males typically display larger size, more extended fins, and stronger territorial behavior, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller, less colorful, and more reclusive.

They reach about 5–6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves and crevices for hiding, a sandy substrate, and moderate open swimming areas, along with stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as this species can dart quickly when startled.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and occasional pellets formulated for carnivores. With proper care, this fish makes a unique and eye-catching addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
