Blue/Yellow Grouper

The Blue/Yellow Grouper (Epinephelus flavocaeruleus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant coloration, striking blue-to-yellow body tones, robust size, and commanding presence.

Males typically develop brighter coloration with a more dominant body structure, while females/juveniles are duller in color, often showing more subdued yellow and blue shades. They reach about 35–40 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 300 gallons or more.

Provide ample live rock for hiding, a sandy substrate, and large open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as groupers can be powerful and prone to sudden movements.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as fresh shrimp, squid, fish, silversides, krill, and other protein-rich items (occasionally accepting frozen or pellet foods if conditioned). With proper care, this fish makes a spectacular centerpiece in a large marine system, though its predatory nature means it should not be kept with small fish or invertebrates.
