The Blue Throat Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking blue throat, metallic body accents, unique patterns, and moderate size.
Males typically display brighter coloration with more pronounced blue markings and slightly larger size, while females and juveniles exhibit softer colors and smaller, more subtle patterns. They reach about 10–12 inches as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide a sandbed, plenty of live rock for hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid since triggerfish are known to jump. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and algae. With proper care, the Blue Throat Triggerfish makes a striking and active addition to a marine aquarium, adding both color and personality to the tank.
