Velvet Damselfish

Blue Streak Damselfish (Neoglyphidodon oxyodon) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant electric-blue streaks, bold contrasting patterns, hardy nature, and active swimming behavior.

Males typically become darker in coloration as they mature, sometimes losing much of the bright blue and displaying more muted or black tones during breeding, while females/juveniles retain the brilliant neon blue streaks with striking patterns, making them more visually attractive.

They reach about 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons to accommodate their territorial behavior and swimming activity.

Provide ample live rock for hiding and territory establishment, open swimming spaces, and a sandbed, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and some algae-based foods to maintain health and coloration. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and striking addition to the aquarium, though best suited for moderately aggressive community setups or larger reef tanks with caution.
