The Blue Squamosa Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking mantle coloration, unique scale-like shell patterns, and impressive size. Its electric blue hues with intricate iridescent markings make it one of the most eye-catching clams available to aquarists.
Unlike fish, clams do not have distinct male/female appearance differences—T. squamosa is a protandric hermaphrodite, meaning individuals can function as male first and later as female. Juveniles typically filter-feed more heavily, while larger adults rely primarily on their symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy, supplemented by filter feeding.
They can reach about 12–16 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to provide adequate space and stable water quality. A stable sandbed or live rock ledge is preferred, where the clam can attach securely using its byssal threads. Like all Tridacna species, they require strong reef lighting (LED, T5, or metal halide) to support photosynthesis.
Maintain stable water parameters:
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
Temperature: 72–79°F
pH: 8.1–8.4
Calcium: 380–450 ppm
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Diet should consist of phytoplankton, marine snow, and dissolved nutrients in the water column. Juveniles benefit from regular live phytoplankton or commercial filter-feeding supplements, while adults thrive mostly from light-driven photosynthesis with occasional supplemental feeding. With proper care, this clam makes a stunning centerpiece in reef aquariums, adding both beauty and natural filtration.
