The Blue Spotted Stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking electric-blue spots, diamond-shaped disc, long slender tail, and graceful swimming style.
Males typically have smaller disc sizes, proportionally longer claspers, and are more active in seeking mates, while females/juveniles are larger-bodied, rounder in disc shape, and more sedentary when resting on the substrate. They reach about 18–22 inches (disc width + tail length) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 300+ gallons, with an emphasis on floor space rather than height.
Provide a fine sandbed to prevent skin abrasions, minimal live rock arranged to leave open swimming space, and some hiding spots/caves for resting. They thrive in stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since stingrays can leap or climb the tank walls when stressed.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, small crustaceans, squid, clam meat, and chopped shrimp, with occasional supplementation of high-quality marine meaty pellets. With proper care, this stingray makes a stunning and unique centerpiece, but it requires advanced aquarist experience and very specific conditions.
