The Blue Spotted Stingray (Taeniura lymma) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its vivid blue spots, flattened disc shape, striking color contrast, and unique bottom-dwelling “hovering” swimming behavior.
Males typically have slightly smaller disc diameters, more slender tails, and may display territorial behavior during feeding, while females/juveniles are larger-bodied, more docile, and often stay closer to the substrate. They reach about 20–24 inches (disc + tail length) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 250+ gallons, due to their benthic lifestyle and swimming needs.
Provide a fine sandbed (to prevent ventral injury), minimal live rock to allow open bottom swimming, and hiding spots or shallow caves for resting. They thrive in stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is recommended since stingrays may jump when startled.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped seafood (squid, shrimp, clam), and high-quality meaty pellets. With proper care, the Blue Spotted Stingray becomes a striking centerpiece in a marine aquarium, rewarding attentive aquarists with its unique patterns and behavior.
