Blue Spotted Shrimp Goby

Blue Spotted Shrimp Goby (Cryptocentrus pavoninoides) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its attractive light grey to tan body covered in iridescent blue spots, elongated shape, symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, and shy yet curious personality. Males typically are slightly larger and may be more territorial, especially when paired with a shrimp, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and more passive, often staying close to their burrow. They reach about 4 to 5 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for structure and hiding, and open space near the bottom for interaction, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid, as gobies are known jumpers. Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets, and with proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium—especially when paired with a compatible pistol shrimp.
