The Blue Spotted Sea Hare (Bursatella leachii) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking blue spots, mottled body patterns, and unique sea hare appearance. Unlike many marine invertebrates, it is sought after for its natural algae-grazing ability, making it both beautiful and functional in a reef system.

Males typically resemble females, as this species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with no distinct external sexual dimorphism. Juveniles are generally smaller and lighter in coloration, developing more vivid spotting as they mature.

They reach about 12 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate with ample live rock and hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as sea hares may crawl or climb out of tanks if stressed.

Diet should consist primarily of filamentous algae, hair algae, and other natural microalgae sources. Supplemental feeding with dried seaweed (nori) or specialized herbivore preparations can be offered if natural algae growth is insufficient. With proper care, this fascinating invertebrate makes a standout addition to the aquarium, helping maintain algae control while adding unique visual interest.
