The Blue Sponge (Haliclona sp. on Scleractinia) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant blue coloration, unique porous structure, and encrusting growth pattern. Unlike fish, sponges do not have separate male and female sexes in a way aquarists typically observe; instead, they are capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction.

They reach about 8–12 inches (depending on colony growth) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons with ample live rock for attachment and shaded areas. Sponges require stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and must never be exposed to air, as trapped air bubbles can damage their internal canal system.

Provide live rock structures, shaded crevices, and gentle water flow that delivers dissolved nutrients and plankton. They do not require a sandbed or open swimming space but benefit from a well-established reef tank with stable nutrient levels.

Diet should consist of dissolved organic matter, phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, and other microscopic foods introduced via target feeding or natural water column plankton. They do not consume mysis, brine, pellets, or algae directly like fish.

With proper care, this invertebrate makes a standout addition to the aquarium, serving as both a natural filter and a striking splash of color in reef aquascaping.
