The Blue Spiny Lobster (Panulirus versicolor) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant blue and green coloration, striking patterns, and long, spiny antennae. Males typically have larger and more robust claws and longer antennae, while females and juveniles display slightly smaller claws and less intense coloration. They reach about 12-16 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock for hiding spots, and some open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4). A secure lid is essential since many lobsters are prone to climbing or jumping. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and pellets formulated for crustaceans, and with proper care, this lobster makes a standout and fascinating addition to the aquarium.
