The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking iridescent blue coloration, intricate mantle patterns, and unique shell ridges. Unlike fish, Maxima Clams do not display sexual dimorphism in the way males and females look different; instead, they are protandric hermaphrodites, meaning they start life as males and can later develop female reproductive capacity as they grow larger and older. Juveniles are typically smaller and may have less vivid coloration, which intensifies as they mature.

They reach about 12 inches in length (though most stay smaller in aquariums, often around 6–8 inches) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons for stability. Provide a stable environment with strong lighting (essential for their symbiotic zooxanthellae), moderate water flow, and placement on live rock or a stable substrate where they can attach by byssal threads.

Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4, calcium 380–450 ppm, alkalinity 8–12 dKH, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) to ensure healthy shell and mantle growth. A secure lid is not necessary, as clams do not jump like fish, but stability and water quality are crucial.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthesis from their zooxanthellae under strong reef lighting, supplemented in smaller specimens (<2 inches) with phytoplankton, marine snow, and other microplankton foods. Larger clams generally rely on light and dissolved nutrients rather than direct feeding. With proper care, the Blue Maxima Clam makes a dazzling, long-lived centerpiece in a reef aquarium, both for its beauty and its role in natural reef filtration.
