Blue Hana Dartfish

The Blue Hana Dartfish (Ptereleotris hanae) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender body, graceful swimming style, shimmering bluish-silver coloration, and habit of hovering elegantly in the water column. Their active, darting movements bring life and activity to a reef tank, while their calm temperament makes them excellent community fish.

Males typically grow slightly larger, display more vibrant coloration, and may show territorial or courtship displays, while females and juveniles remain smaller with softer hues and are less dominant.

They reach about 5–6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, though larger systems are recommended if keeping them in small groups. Provide ample live rock for hiding, fine sand or rubble substrate, and plenty of open swimming space, and always use a secure lid since dartfish are known to jump when startled.

Stable water conditions are important, with salinity maintained at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality pellets or flakes for carnivores. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are ideal, as dartfish are active swimmers with high metabolisms.

With proper care, the Blue Hana Dartfish makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, valued for its peaceful temperament, brilliant coloration, and elegant mid-water presence.
