The Blue Gudgeon Dartfish (Ptereleotris heteroptera) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender, elongated body, shimmering blue coloration, graceful darting movements, and tendency to hover mid-water near the substrate or reef structure.
Males typically grow slightly larger, may develop more vibrant blue hues, and can display subtle dominance behaviors during courtship or territory defense, while females and juveniles remain smaller with softer coloration and less assertive behavior.
They reach about 5–6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, though larger tanks provide better stability for groups. Provide ample live rock for hiding, open swimming space, and fine sand or rubble substrate for comfort, along with a secure lid since dartfish are known to jump when startled.
Stable water parameters are required: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.
Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores. Frequent small feedings are best, as dartfish are active swimmers with high metabolisms.
With proper care, the Blue Gudgeon Dartfish makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, admired for its peaceful nature, stunning coloration, and lively swimming behavior that adds movement and beauty to the display.

On request, we also send photos/videos after arrival at IA. Some species are import-to-order (3-10 business days). Many common species are already cleared or near the end of QT.
Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
