The Blue Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla sp.) is a semi-aggressive invertebrate species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vivid blue coloration, intricate radial patterns, large fleshy oral disk, and its ability to host clownfish and other symbiotic species. This species stands out in aquariums for its dramatic appearance and movement, adding both color and life to reef displays.
Males typically grow larger and exhibit more intense coloration, with extended tentacles and a robust oral disk, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller, with softer coloration and shorter tentacles, developing their vibrant hues and size with maturity.
Adult Blue Carpet Anemones reach about 12–18 inches in diameter, and they should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to accommodate their size and ecological needs.
Their habitat should include a deep sandbed for anchoring, plenty of live rock to secure attachment points, open swimming space around them, and sheltered hiding spots to feel secure. Stable water conditions are essential for their survival: salinity ~1.023-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, and pH ~8.1-8.4. A secure lid is crucial since many carpet anemones are prone to jumping or detaching from their anchor.
The Blue Carpet Anemone’s diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. With consistent care and stable conditions, this species becomes a captivating and long-lasting centerpiece in a reef aquarium.
