Blood Red Feather Sea Lily

Blood Red Feather Sea Lily (Heterometra sp.). It is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking deep red coloration, feathery arms, delicate patterns, and unique filter-feeding appearance.

Males typically show no obvious external differences from females, as this species is not sexually dimorphic, while juveniles are smaller with less fully developed arms and a more fragile appearance. They reach about 6–8 inches across in arm span and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons to provide stable conditions and enough space for proper placement. Provide live rock with shaded crevices, gentle flow zones, and areas to perch, as well as stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).

A secure lid is recommended to prevent dislodging or accidental damage, as they can move about the tank seeking suitable current. Diet should consist of suspended planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, copepods, rotifers, baby brine shrimp, and other microfoods delivered via target feeding or in the water column. With proper care and specialized feeding, this invertebrate makes a stunning and unusual showcase addition to the aquarium, though it is best kept by advanced hobbyists due to its delicate care needs.
