Blacktail Chromis

Blacktail Chromis (Chromis nigrura) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant coloration, yellow tail with dark edging, and active schooling behavior.

Males typically display brighter colors and may become territorial during spawning, while females/juveniles are smaller, less intensely colored, and more passive.

They reach about 4 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger tanks are recommended for groups).

Provide ample live rock for shelter, open swimming space, and hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since Chromis species are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of a mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods.With proper care, this fish makes a hardy, active, and colorful addition to reef or community aquariums.
