The Blackstripe Dottyback (Pseudochromis perspicillatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold black lateral stripe running from the snout to the tail, slender body, compact size, and confident demeanor. This species is especially noted for its striking contrast and active behavior, often exploring the rockwork and darting between crevices.

Males typically display slightly brighter coloration and may exhibit more territorial or dominant behaviors, especially during breeding. Females and juveniles tend to be smaller and show more subdued hues but share the same general appearance and activity level.

They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide plenty of live rock with hiding spots, caves, and crevices, which help reduce aggression and establish territories. Some open swimming space is also beneficial for natural movement.

Maintain stable water parameters:

  • Salinity: ~1.020–1.025

  • Temperature: ~72–79°F

  • pH: ~8.1–8.4

A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as dottybacks are known to jump, especially when startled.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Occasional feedings of enriched frozen foods will support optimal coloration and health.

With proper care, the Blackstripe Dottyback makes a bold and attractive addition to marine aquariums, especially those with a well-structured aquascape and carefully selected tank mates.

Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
