Blacksmith Chromis

The Blacksmith Chromis (Chromis punctipinnis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, bold patterns, moderate size, and unique schooling behavior. This species is known for its dramatic color shift — juveniles display a vibrant two-tone pattern of blue-gray and orange-brown, while adults adopt a deep blue-black body accented with distinctive black spots near the tail. Their dynamic swimming and territorial tendencies make them a captivating addition to marine aquariums.

Males typically develop more intense coloration during maturity and breeding, becoming slightly territorial to guard their chosen area. Females and juveniles maintain their striking two-tone appearance but show less aggressive behavior, often schooling together for protection.

Blacksmith Chromis reach about 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) at full maturity and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to provide ample swimming space and proper territory. A thriving environment includes a sandbed, abundant live rock, multiple hiding spots, and open swimming areas. Maintaining stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) is essential, and a secure lid is necessary because these fish are known to jump.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and algae, ensuring a balanced and nutritious regimen. With proper care, the Blacksmith Chromis becomes a striking centerpiece, offering both visual beauty and fascinating behavior in a reef or fish-only aquarium setup.
