The Blackrim Cusk Eel (Lepophidium profundorum) is a peaceful species that is generally reef-safe with caution, admired for its subtle yet striking coloration, distinctive black-edged fins, and pale spotting along the body. Males and females/juveniles are similar in appearance, showing only slight differences in size and fin development. Adults reach about 10–11 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons. They thrive in tanks with a sandy substrate, live rock for hiding spots, and ample open swimming space. Maintaining stable water parameters—salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4—is essential, and a secure lid is recommended as this species can be prone to jumping. Their diet should consist primarily of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and copepods. With proper care, the Blackrim Cusk Eel is a unique and captivating addition to a marine aquarium.
