Blackfin Soapfish Grouper

The Fish Blackfin Soapfish Grouper (Rypticus nigripinnis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its dark coloration with contrasting black fins, unique soapfish defensive toxin, and secretive nature. Males typically grow larger with more vivid fin coloration and display more territorial behavior, while females/juveniles remain smaller, less aggressive, and show slightly duller shades. They reach about 8–10 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with hiding spots and caves, along with some open swimming space. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, and pH ~8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as some individuals may attempt to jump.

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets, though they may also accept other protein-rich frozen preparations. With proper care, the Blackfin Soapfish Grouper makes a unique and striking addition to the aquarium, best suited for experienced aquarists due to its special toxin-producing ability.
