Black Spotted Butterflyfish (Chaetodon nigropunctatus) is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its soft gray to bluish body covered in distinct black spots, a black eye band, and a subtly elongated body shape that gives it a sleek, refined appearance. Males typically look similar to females, with little to no external differences, although some may show slightly enhanced coloration during spawning, while females/juveniles have the same overall pattern, but juveniles may display slightly duller tones until mature. They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons.
Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter, open swimming space, and a calm environment, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is necessary, as butterflyfish may jump when startled or stressed.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, sponge-based foods, finely chopped marine seafood, and high-quality marine omnivore pellets or flakes. Due to their specialized diet and tendency to nip at coral polyps and invertebrates, they are not recommended for reef aquariums. With proper care and attention to feeding, this fish makes a graceful and eye-catching addition to a fish-only or FOWLR setup.

On request, we also send photos/videos after arrival at IA. Some species are import-to-order (3-10 business days). Many common species are already cleared or near the end of QT.
Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
