Black Saddle Grouper

The Black Saddle Grouper (Plectropomus laevis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, bold saddle-like black markings across its body, impressive size, and predatory nature. Males typically grow larger, displaying more vivid coloration and bolder pattern contrasts, while females and juveniles tend to remain smaller with slightly duller tones. They reach about 40–50 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500 gallons due to their size and swimming needs.

Provide ample live rock for hiding, open swimming space, and sturdy structures, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as silversides, squid, shrimp, and other marine-based preparations, and with proper care this fish makes a standout addition to a large predator or display aquarium.
