The Black Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration and unique features. Juveniles are jet-black with a yellow dorsal fin, adult males develop a vibrant blue body with a yellow snout and lower jaw, and females are entirely yellow or yellow with some blue toward the posterior. Males typically reach about 25–32 inches (63–81 cm) in length, while females can grow up to 47 inches (120 cm). They should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, though a 100-gallon tank is recommended for optimal care. Provide a deep (4–5 inch) sandy substrate, live rock for hiding spots, and secure PVC pipes or caves for shelter. Ensure the aquarium has a tight-fitting lid, as these eels are known escape artists.
Stable water parameters are crucial: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH levels of 8.1–8.4. Maintain excellent water quality with low ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as live feeder fish, shrimp, and crabs, as well as frozen or prepared foods like mysis and brine shrimp. These eels do not compete well for food, so ensure they are fed adequately.
With proper care, the Black Ribbon Eel makes a standout addition to the aquarium, captivating observers with its unique appearance and behavior. However, due to its specialized care requirements, it is best suited for experienced aquarists.
