Black Mini

Black Mini (Ircinia sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its unique porous structure, dark black coloration, natural filtration abilities, and compact size. Unlike fish, sponges do not have noticeable sexual dimorphism, so males and females/juveniles cannot be easily distinguished.

They typically reach about 4–6 inches in size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons with ample live rock for attachment and stable conditions. Provide moderate to strong water flow, shaded areas away from direct intense lighting, and excellent water quality (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). Unlike fish, they do not require a lid, but care should be taken not to expose them to air, as this can damage their internal structure.

Diet should consist of dissolved organic matter, phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, and other microscopic planktonic foods introduced to the water column. With proper care and stable conditions, this sponge makes a standout natural filter and decorative addition to a reef aquarium.
