Black Margin Dottyback, Male

The Black Margin Dottyback, Male (Pseudochromis tapeinosoma) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking dark margins along the fins contrasting against a vibrant body color, compact size, and lively behavior. Males typically display more intense coloration with well-defined black edges on their fins and a slightly more robust body, while females and juveniles are usually less vividly colored with softer fin margins and a more subdued appearance.

They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a well-established tank with plenty of live rock, numerous hiding spots, and moderate open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around ~1.020-1.025, temperature between ~72-79°F, and pH from ~8.1-8.4. A secure lid is essential as dottybacks are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium, especially for hobbyists seeking a colorful and active dottyback.
