The Black Longfin Grouper (Plesiops melas) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking dark coloration, elongated fins, and secretive nature. Males typically display larger body size with more extended fin rays, while females and juveniles are smaller, with less pronounced fins and more subdued coloration. They reach about 6–8 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.
Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, as this species prefers sheltered areas over open swimming space. Ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, since they may attempt to jump when startled. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, small crustaceans, and meaty prepared foods, though they may accept high-quality pellets over time. With proper care and an appropriate environment, the Black Longfin Grouper makes a bold and unique addition to the aquarium.
