Black Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus niger) is a peaceful species that is completely reef-safe, making it an excellent choice for mixed reef systems as it poses no threat to corals or invertebrates while focusing primarily on algae grazing. This distinctive rabbitfish displays a uniform dark charcoal to black coloration across its entire body, creating a bold and elegant appearance that stands out beautifully against colorful reef backgrounds, complemented by the characteristic fox-like face and constantly working mouth used for continuous algae consumption. The striking solid black coloration and tireless grazing behavior make it both a unique visual statement and highly effective natural algae controller. It can reach about 8-10 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons or more due to their active swimming and foraging nature, with plenty of live rock for algae growth and grazing opportunities, stable water parameters, and careful handling due to their venomous dorsal spines, though they're generally very peaceful and often develop engaging personalities with their keepers. Its diet should focus heavily on marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, quality herbivore pellets—with occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter for optimal health and will provide excellent nuisance algae control while maintaining their dramatic black appearance.
