Black Durgeon Triggerfish

Black Durgon Triggerfish] ([Melichthys niger]) — a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its sleek jet-black to dark green coloration, subtle blue highlights, lyre-shaped tail, and active swimming behavior.

Males typically display slightly larger size, bolder coloration, and more dominant territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are smaller, more subdued in color, and less aggressive.

They reach about 12 inches (30 cm) in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, a sandy substrate, and plenty of open swimming space, along with a secure lid since this species is prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped squid, clam, krill, and high-quality marine pellets) along with some algae-based foods to balance nutrition. With proper care, the Black Durgon Triggerfish makes a standout, hardy, and visually striking addition to a large marine aquarium.
