Black Cardinalfish

The Black Cardinalfish (Apogonichthyoides melas) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking deep black coloration, nocturnal habits, compact size, and ability to blend into dim reef environments—making it an excellent addition for aquarists who appreciate subtle beauty. Males typically engage in mouthbrooding, carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths to protect them until they hatch, while females/juveniles share similar coloration but do not brood eggs and are generally slightly smaller. They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with shaded or cave-like hiding spots, as this species is nocturnal and prefers low-light conditions or evening activity. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as cardinalfish can jump when startled. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty frozen foods, and high-quality micro pellets, especially offered during dusk when they are most active. With proper care, this fish makes a low-maintenance, elegant addition to peaceful reef or community aquariums.
