The Black Cap Damselfish (Chrysiptera rollandi) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, distinct black cap, compact size, and bold personality. Males typically display an intense, deep black cap contrasted against a bright blue body, becoming even more vibrant during breeding and exhibiting territorial behavior. Females and juveniles are slightly duller, with a softer blue hue and a less pronounced black cap, and generally show calmer behavior. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
A healthy setup for this species should include a sand bed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space to allow for natural behavior and grazing. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH ranging from 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as damselfish are known jumpers. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and algae-based foods to ensure proper nutrition. With consistent care and a suitable environment, the Black Cap Damselfish becomes a hardy, colorful, and lively addition to any saltwater aquarium.
